February Wrap-Up!

For this wrap-up I was going to do just books but decided to add in the TV shows I’ve been watching too as I’ve recently had the attention span to sit down and binge watch some Netflix!

Books

A little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I’m not really sure why this got 4 stars rather than 5 if I’m honest. I just felt it was right for how I felt (if that makes any sense at all). It was a lovely short book with a really sweet story that had quite a sad event, I felt it was quite a positive book. I truly loved Sara and she reminded me a little of Anne from Anne of Green Gables!

The book tells the story of young Sara as she comes to England for her schooling and with her father’s wealth, was given anything desired, though she was not spoilt, but a really lovely, grateful girl. Then Sara’s father dies, with suddenly no wealth leaving Sara completely poor.

Another forgotten Child by Cathy Glass

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I was looking at reading a Cathy Glass book for a while as I heard about her and wanted to try her books just to see what they were about. A very kind friend sent me a couple of them, one of them being Another Forgotten Child. I wasn’t sure if I was going to actually enjoy it or not but it’s fair to say, I loved it! I was well and completely hooked and Cathy Glass is a truly amazing woman.

This book is the story of Aimee, a young girl in which Cathy fosters. With Aimee’s parent’s history and other siblings, they can’t understand how Aimee has slipped through the system. This is both a sad and happy book, as you hear about Aimee’s life before, and as she eventually develops.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This book probably doesn’t deserve 5 stars, more like 2, and I now if I hadn’t been as hooked as I was, it certainly would have gotten it. But truthfully, I loved it. The characters were clichéd but I still loved them. And the plot as well. Maggie Stiefvater has put a lovely twist on to the typical werewolf behaviours and I really did love that! If you’re looking for something as good as the Raven Boys, turn away. I did consider DNFing this book at the start, I truly hated the beginning, but I gave it a chance and I’m glad I did.

I have no idea how to summarise this book without making it sound cheesy. Basically a girl falls in love with a werewolf. I’ve not read twilight but all I’ve heard is it basically a wolf version of that.

TV and movies

I’m leaving these unrated but still want to share my thoughts!

A series of Unfortunate Events – Season 1

I’ve not read Lemony Snicket’s books so I haven’t the books to compare them to, but I really did enjoy this. I did love the movie when I was younger, I loved the creepiness of it, but now after watching the new TV series, so many things were not explained in the movie. While I think I will still enjoy the movie, I’m well and truly hooked on to the TV series. I’m tempted to pick up the books though I’m currently doing really well on a book buying ban and have so many more to read. I may consider watching the TV show first and reading the books after for a change! I have a very poor attention span when it comes to TV so if I read the books, I won’t be able to sit through the TV shows as well but I think doing it the other way around will work for me.

Haters Back Off – Season 1

The only real reason this was on my list on Netflix was because Angela Kinsey, from The Office US, is in it and it was quite a light, fun watch, and I really did enjoy it! I enjoyed the length of the episodes (half an hour each) and I thought it was quite funny. And Patrick, bless him. He was so sweet and I was constantly rooting for him. His love for Miranda was adorable. I’m hoping there is going to be a season 2 coming.

Shadowhunters – season 2

Anyone following Shadowhunters knows this isn’t finished yet but it has been something I’ve been watching during February. I’m really enjoying it, and I think it’s slightly different from the book/s (I read the books about 3 years ago now) but I’m really enjoying it still! There is one thing that really irritates me and that is Max. He’s meant to be this sweet little kid but he’s pretty cheeky in the show. He’s not awful but I prefer book Max by a long way.

The big painting challenge (TV)

This show is one of my absolute favourites! This is series 2 (I think) and it’s currently playing on BBC One on Sundays at 6:00pm. It’s basically like a painting version of Great British Bake Off and I really do love it. They had a series a couple of years ago and I loved it and I didn’t think it was going to come back and it has so I’m a very happy bunny and I look forward to 6 O’clock every sunday!

Me Before You (Movie)

I read the book about a year ago and my mum and I couldn’t brave it to the cinema and then it was £10 at Tesco and we didn’t want to pay that much for it when it would drop in price at some point and the other day we brought it for £5 at Tesco. There were some bits that annoyed me, like the end where it’s twisted slightly, but I really did enjoy this a lot.

I think I’ll leave it at that for last months wrap-up! I think it sums up my month of reading and watching rather well!
